Cooperation in music education between the Netherlands and Macedonia
September – December 2011, Skopje, Macedonia

starting a new field in music education
Shifting Values brings two institutions for music education in close cooperation with the goal of starting a new chapter in the music education in Macedonia.

The Utrecht School of Music and Technology in the Netherlands is the only school in Europe that offers such a broad scale of study directions in professional education in the field of Music and Technology.
The Music and Ballet Education Centre – Ilija Nikolovski Luj in Macedonia, unique in its kind, educates talented musicians and dancers in broad profiles.
In general lines the project supports cultural knowledge exchange and capacity development in the field of music and technology. During this project, the two schools will closely collaborate to create the first curriculum for music and technology in the region.

about Shifting Values
This project is closely related to the 14 day Blind Date project that took place in July/August 2011 in Ohrid, Macedonia (read more about Blind Date). During the intense summer Blind Date, many questions arose that couldn’t be answered with the required depth due to the time limit of the project. Therefore, Shifting Values will give the students/teachers/artists, the opportunity to go deeper into these subjects and questions as well as present basic lessons in music and technology that would in time be taken over by the teaching staff of the Music and Ballet Centre in Skopje.

With the long-term goal of implementing music technology into the current music curriculum, Shifting Values will work on establishing a creative research environment that does not exist in this region at the moment. For artists/students this will be an environment where they will be introduced to the world of contemporary arts, encouraged to freely experiment, investigate, create their own stile, their own way of working. The environment will be research-based and artists/students will be challenged to cultivate their skills for constant learning so they will be able to keep up with the rapid changes in the field of professional arts. They will be encouraged to use self-reflection as a tool in their creative process.
The project will offer several concerts and work in progress presentations.
